Austrian duo Camo and Krooked had a huge 2017. Not only did they release their fourth album, Mosaik, on Sony’s BMG label to huge critical acclaim, but they absolutely cleaned house at the Drum&BassArena Awards, winning best producer, best album, and best track (for Ember). In fact, the only award they were nominated for that they didn’t win was best DJ, which they placed second in. Not only that, but they recorded their now legendary Essential Mix for Radio 1, which many people (including myself) still listen to on heavy rotation.
In 2018 Camo and Krooked followed the huge success of Mosaik with an equally amazing remix album, featuring remixes from Drum and Bass legends such as Noisia, Break, and Culture Shock. However, aside from their remix album, Camo and Krooked didn’t release a single tune themselves in 2018, instead opting to spend the year touring and creatively regrouping.
‘Kallisto’ is the third single that Camo and Krooked have released in 2019. They started the year off by dropping the tune ‘Atlas’ on UKF to help celebrate the label’s 10th anniversary. This marked their departure from RAM Records and BMG, and soon after they announced their return to Hospital Records with their experimental single ‘Loa’. According to Camo and Krooked, “Loa was inspired by Haitian Voodoo rituals and brings that vibe directly to your eardrum”. This was a noticeable departure from the club-friendly sound that Camo and Krooked was known for, which begs the question, “what’s next”?
After this more experimental track, ‘Kallisto’ is a welcome return to the sound which made Camo and Krooked so incredibly popular in the first place. They’ve paired up with fellow Austrian Mefjus once more, and the result is a proper feel good, hands in the air, kind of tune that you can’t help but dance to. Euphoric strings and vocals paired with heavy pulsing basslines and aggressive drums give this tune a distinct feel that only Camo and Krooked are capable of capturing. If this is a sign of things to come for this incredibly talented duo, then I would venture to guess that we are all in for an incredibly exciting 2020.
