Every now and then a release will come along that grips your attention. Something executed so well and so far outside of the norm it instantly goes into your bag and has you feverishly typing to your peers about how sick your latest musical find is. Ceph’s latest “Cruciatus EP” has been my personal latest instance of this. distinctly Jump Up in genre, however strongly possessing Neurofunk level sound design. A marriage of elements I personally feel the scene has been ready and waiting for.

The Title track “Cruciatus” opens with tough slamming drums. Metallic percussion and droning pads accompany in the build up. As you’re dropped into the first dance section. A flurry of stretched and twisted mid range locks in the groove, sure to get heads nodding. A well placed deep vocal sample compliments the vibe perfectly, adding the perfect unmistakable amount of grit and darkness to tie the track together.

“Only Needs Revenge” is the second feature on this release. Opening with minimal elements. Rhythmic chimes march you towards the drop, providing no hits about the oncoming madness. dropping into the first dance section you’re instantly barraged with granular mid range lead elements. The choice in arrangement aims at an abrasive vibe, sure to put a stink faces on.

To wrap up the EP we have “El Psy Congroo”. A punishing selection that relentlessly drills and dance floor and is sure to get things moving. With a timid intro, plenty of space is available to mix into whatever vibe you’re currently throwing. The first section hits hard. Reeling stabs and the signature gritting mid range of the EP is present, pushed along by a straight forward and easy to follow drum pattern.

Ceph’s “Cruciatus EP” is the third release this year (along side Current Value & L3MMY DUBZ) showcasing a new brand of sound design Jump Up. Advancements like this are always exciting, as it shows the labels and artists progression and open mindedness to try new things. This EP has me sitting on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating whats to come next from this new and forward thinking sound.
