United By Breakbeat’s Weekly DJ Showcase #9
United by Breakbeat (UBB) is a drum and bass DJ collective that includes artists and broadcasters from around the world – it is an open enrollment Twitch team founded by Christopher Goodacre (a.k.a. Guddah) that focuses on increasing the visibility and reach of it’s members. The team offers a mutltitude of resources to every member, including tips on getting a stream started, using Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) and other tools, endless troubleshooting, promotion, community raid trains (a way to pass viewers from one artist to the next), and now a weekly community DJ showcase. As Twitch has grown and changed in the last few years the discoverability of new DJs has been a challenge – there is almost no way to grow on the platform without some sort of help, and retaining viewership can be a difficult game. That being said, there are many things that the platform provides that can’t be found anywhere else: the openness of being able to essentially play whatever music you want, the gamification and amount of interactions, and the strength of the community. On the artistic side of Twitch, it is delightful to see the creativity of individuals show on their stream through the infinite customizations that are available as well as their broadcasting style, aesthetic, and knowledge. Every presenter has their own story!
The core goal behind the showcase is to put a spotlight on these artist’s hard work, whatever story they would like to share, and to provide a space where the public can see their acclaim. Organized by Guddah with support from the UBB team, the showcase is now in it’s third week – when Guddah isn’t working on this or streaming, he is helping other people and building his community/platform. The team is designed to be a collective to share ideas, promote and help one another, and increase the visibility of its members as well as drum and bass in general. Every week this show is improving, last week we introduced the discord format in which some of the presenters including Guddah speak in between the sets about the previous DJ.
Every week I will provide a short biography of the artists, a quick look at their set from the week, background based on their submission questionnaire, and provide information about forthcoming shows, sign-ups, and membership perks. The full recording of these showcases will be available on Guddah’s YouTube channel.
This week we saw a returning DJ, Soul Concept with another vibey set, Chocolate Lasanga, Triple Se7en, and Kayto Potato – all of these streamers brought a unique vibe to the showcase ranging from liquid funk to neuro, with a nice dose of jungle in there. Broadcasting with a range of experience and influence, some of which are producers, this group of performers dug deep to entertain the crowd.
Here’s what went down:
First performer: Chocolate Lasagna
Hailing from Philadelphia at the moment but a Dallas native, Chocolate Lasagna has a long history with DJing and electronic music. Heavily influenced by labels like Hospital and Liquicity he brings a special approach to vocal driven DnB with a funky sauce that can’t be denied. His energy is infectious when he’s spinning as you can see in the recap video, and the vibes match during his sets! He’s a very active streamer and chatter on Twitch and is regularly involved with the community, citing collaborations with numerous Twitch teams and other DJs, which have expanded his crate of tunes greatly over the years.
From the questionnaire:
I first got into djing when i was 15 or 16 with Two Stanton Turntables and a DVS setup on virtual dj around 2010. Not sure why but I sold them when i was off to college and didnt touch it again till grabbing a cheap controller few years ago. from there it was off to the races. I mostly stream on twitch but recently after meeting so many great djs in philly I have been playing more with friends and even tried an open decks. Not sure what the future holds but hopefully the fun i get out of this continues for a long long time.
Video games exposed me to a lot of it (especially racing games), but my strongest memory is the video for Netsky – Iron Heart (2010). DnB had a constant presence from that point, but it wasn’t until I got into local DnB scenes in more recent years that I fully realized its impact on me.
Like many during covid, Twitch filled a void. After hanging in chat for a year or so decided to dust off the dj hobby. the twitch community got me through some some hard places and has solidified my love of DnB.
Top three tunes of all time: Spor “Aztec”, nu:logic “Morning Light”, Netsky “Eyes Closed”
Staying true to his influences and roots, Chocolate brought a super clean and musical set full of fresh liquid funk and classics alike. He balances his use of vocals and melody extremely well during his performance, and established a flow early on that he was able to feed throughout the entire thing and dances between jazzy horn lines and bassline driven motifs. I really enjoyed watching this guy DJ especially during the major part of funky goodness – it reminded me of what a raver in the crowd would be doing, and that added a lot to the set between the energy and visual input. Chocolate ends his set with a set of fiery minimal slammers and even digs into some techstep for the closing run. What a fun time! Check out what he’s been up to below:
Second performer: Soul Concept

Soul Concept is an incredibly talented producer and label head with a penchant for creating melody driven, jazz-fused Liquid Funk with releases on Soul Deep Digital, Omni Music, and his own imprint, Soul Concept Music. From Northampton, UK, he quotes DJ Krust as a major influence in his early days, captured by his classic ‘Warhead’ and it’s driving bassline and tension. Hooked at that point, he quickly discovered a love for liquid through the great LTJ Bukem and once he attended some of the legendary Progression Sessions at The End, the journey began. Main influences include Calibre, Alix Perex, Lenzman, High Contrast, and Bukem.
Infusing his DJ performances with a musical touch Soul Concept delivers a set as varied and nuanced as the set of influences he lists, tastefully letting the music speak and breathe. The chat was entirely suprised by a few sections of this one. Shoutout to FunkyVibe (one of Soul Concept’s mates) for “…convincing me to give it a go during the pandemic”. Good work!

I’ve been DJing in various genres since around 1997. I started by playing at house parties and local community events, then later got into corportate events and weddings. During the early 2000s, I played a few regular student nights around london – mainly garage, rnb, hiphop, bhangra. While at Uni I started attending Swerve (The End) and thats also when I really started to get into DnB.
I also did an 8 hour set on NYE at “The Gherkin” tower in London during that time.
I took a break from DJing for a few years after getting married and starting a family, and then during the Covid lockdown, I discovered Twitch and here we are!

Soul Concept has a penchant for the deep, rolling liquid that he produces and loves dearly so it was no suprise to hear a good dose of this today, however in contrast to his first performance which was full of bangers this was a really nice return home. This set was about as tight as they come – it was clear that he put time into locking his blends in and following melody, key, and modality so each piece of music fits in perfectly. He sticks with a beautiful variety of dubby bass and reece mixed in with classic tight and funky liquid kits, occasionaly throwing in an impactful dubwise jam that adds pop and a palate cleanse. As we close in to the last bit he busts out some massive classics from the liquid funk camp, and once again delves into some delicious deep and minimal vibes to bring the set to the finish line with a tasty remix of l-side’s ‘Slammer’. Third performer: Triple Se7en
A Denver raver who composes and makes beats, Triple Se7en represents the hard dance family this week. Specializing in all harder DnB but making room for some breaks, hard trance, and liquid, this DJ finds inspiration from a wide variety of influences in and out of the electronic music world such as Pharell, The Chemical Brothers, and Rob Zombie. Citing a healthy dose of video games and related movies, we have another DJ exposed to electronica through the hayday of 90s video game culture which if anyone remembers, was FULL of DnB and electronica of various kinds. Triple Se7en is a really active Twitch DJ as well, having participated in raid trains from SkyBass to Stonx – his work in broadcasting has yielded a great looking and professional stream that he brings his driving and energetic style to every time.

I was introduced to DnB in the 90’s through movies like Mortal Kombat Annihilation, Hackers, and Blade. I would buy the soundtracks which opened to door for me to learn many underground artists.
The short version is since i was a kid I’ve tried to learn djing, situations with the instructor kept me from learning…after waiting so long I decided to learn for myself and bought a DDJ 200 and an iPhone. I started releasing mixes on SoundCloud and eventually started djing in Twitch.
I’ve been a beat maker since 2010, Ive always gone for a merge of electronic and hip hop music, I also was mixing music digitally since 2012. I’ve always wanted to Dj since my youth. 3 years ago I picked up a DDJ 200 and have never stopped!
Top three tracks of all time: This is a hard one… but Duran Duran “A View to a Kill” is one song i really love the production on.
I’ve heard this DJ before on raid trains, but this was the first time i got to experience a full set and let me tell you about the energy that was present during this set: remember the bloodrave scene in Blade? From the first drop to the last, this set was absolute carnage. In perfect neuro DJ fashion, Triple packed his set full of doubles, huge builds, and chest thumping impact, only utilizing midsections for more epicness. The stream progresses with tons of the influence he was talking about, matrix quotes, mortal combat quotes, blade gifs, and flying lines of code – the visual vibe really matches the music he’s playing and ADDS to the experience rather than unnecessary visual chaos. After digging through some techy minimal, this streamer takes the opposite arc that the previous two took, reaching high for more uplifting material in the jungle and pop realm. Fourth performer: Kayto Potato
A veteran streamer hailing from Witchita, Kansas, Kayto is a multi-instrumentalist who’s connection to DnB is integral to his story as a DJ and individual. Voted ‘most likely to translate a book into elvish’ in school, his experience with the music shows in the unique choices in the mix and incredible range of sounds he brings out. His story is littered with social tales and friendships within the musical community, electronic DJs and producers, and adventures that have led him to this point, having worked through multiple setups and challenges to entertain the masses. Playing a little bit of everything across the DnB spectrum and even utilizing live looping to add to his performance, Kayto seems to always look for the proper tune for the proper moment. The approach that this artist takes to broadcasting and mixing involves a great respect for the music within the tunes, that is to say he lets tunes beathe and speak for themselves and blends to a laser thin cut. His musical background informs his DJing, using relative major and minor keys to smooth out key transitions as well as the associated melodies. Over the years, he cites almost entirely DJ friends and people in his life as influences to his performing and journey. Love that.

I’m going to start with my musical background.
I started playing guitar at 14 and picked up several other instruments (piano, bass, drums/percussion). During high school, I was in-and-out of a couple of friends’ basement studios using Cool Edit Pro and tinkering with FruityLoops at home. In college, I took a couple recording and composition classes that introduced me to ProTools & Digital Performer:Ignite, as well as using MIDI outboard gear. I was also a sound and light tech at the university’s main auditorium.
In 2007, I moved to Buffalo,NY to live with a couple happy hardcore DJs/Promoters. They had a pair of Technics and CDJ-200s (no, not 2000s) set up in the living room. Between my roommates and the constant flow of DJs coming around, I started to learn how to mix and dove head-first into the scene. The house got sold about 6 months after I moved up there, but I stuck around the area for 2 years until I moved back to Kansas City.
A lot of my influences are the DJ friends who hung out with me and taught me how to mix.

Kansas City crew: Fresh Plates, ZSonic, Panduh, KandikidAssassin
Shortly after moving back to KC, I met my good friend Brad (Fresh_Plates) and started hanging out and mixing DnB/jungle with his records. This carried on for years until Covid hit. Working like crazy during a crazy time and being isolated otherwise was having a big impact on my mental health. In late summer of 2020, I bought a pair of Reloop turntables, a cheap Behringer mixer, and a bunch of used records off Discogs. Since then, I’ve swapped the mixer for a controller, added more records, and worked to improve my craft.
My first couple IRL bookings were goth fetish nights at a BDSM club in Kansas City… talk about a distracting environment. I did make sure to sneak in some DnB ; ) I started streaming about 8 months after I bought my turntables and had begun to feel confident in my mixing. I knew no one and never expected to have more than a few friends watching/following.

Potato’s set today was totally wild, full of twists and turns, dystopian dark jungle, insane choppage, wild movie quotes, and some true classics – I was reminded of tunes in my own origin, like his opener from DJ Fresh, ‘X Project’. Talk about an epic quote. Right out of that he sets up that Major/Minor relation I had mentioned with a tech-y jungle slammer that sets the vibe for the meat of the set really well. I barely recognized a tune in this mix and really enjoyed the showcase of dark and choppy sounds – the sound was totally chaotic and barely roped in but still mixed perfectly, like taming a storm. Drop after drop seemed to go deeper into the madness between breakcore, jungle, and halftime as the first part of his set rolled on, and then finally we roll for a little bit, playing some neuro, some dancefloor before moving into the final flex: a dope all vinyl run. The final part of his set is full of gold, and has that extra sauce. Check out what Kayto Potato has been up to below:
