Interview for Best Drum and Bass: Transforma

If you are into heavy neurofunk, you most likely heard about Transforma already. I discovered This guy and his work recently and was stoked on the amount of quality and energy this dude brings up to the game. If you enjoy his work posted below, make sure to dig into all the news and info he has shared with us. Because there is a lot to read in this article!

How are You Today, what’s your name, how old are You, where are You from ? Tell US about yourself.
I am doing well thanks for asking! Enjoying the weekend after the working week. Hi all my name is Neil but majority of you would know me as Drum n Bass/Neurofunk producer “Transforma“. I am in my mid 30’s originally from Australia but moved over to The Netherlands almost a year ago now. I started producing in late 2012….But only switched to dnb by late 2014.
What first got you into music?
I was always such a musical child, growing up on classic rock and metal. Made me want to take up music & by the age of 13 I got my first electric guitar and began my musical journey!
Who inspired you to make music?
I have a variety of taste when it comes to music….Not just electronic either. My spectrum is wide so i’d say artists like Pink Floyd, Muse, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Soundgarden etc started me off. But for electronic definitely the Prodigy/Aphex Twin/Chemical Bros are the standouts to me.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Angry dark drum n bass but yet still holding a nice groove & melody
What is your creative process like?
Firstly I will usually work on a hook/drop to get the flow happening (So my main drums/bassline/sub). And then I will play around with the main groove always chopping and changing it constantly lol. And then get the bones down for an intro/build. Once I have a solid first half of a tune I will make constant edits to make it even better….It’s a never ending process. But I usually mix as I am going along. And then map out the 2nd half I find it like a very difficult puzzle putting the pieces together, making all elements gel well together & giving each other room to breathe. I’ll then go over the entire track (4 bars at a time) and implement more mixing, editing, general housekeeping so fades, cutting unwanted tails etc. And just fine tuning everything. Once I feel the mix is done and everything sounds great I’ll then render to do sound test on many different audio systems. My workflow has been ridiculous this year so I have gotten a lot done.
What’s is your DAW weapon of choice and what VST do you mostly work with and why ?
I’ve been on Ableton since my humble beginnings and have never switched to another DAW in my almost 8 years producing. I’ve gotten to know it like the back of my hand & the workflow in live to me is unlike any other. I use a variety of VST’s depending on the tune really. But recently I am using a lot of more analog based soft synths as the sound is unreal….U-He Diva, Arturia Pigments, Re-Pro 5 to name a few. I use mainly serum & addictive drums for my drums/transients, And as for bass lately a lot of Fm8, Ableton Operator & of course Serum.
Do you have tendency to get a writer’s block often ?
Every producer out there faces writers block from time to time so yes of course I do. But not so often lately as being in a pandemic I am constantly writing even if it’s just new ideas.
How do you fight it if You have one, what’s the source od your inspiration?
My method is usually take a few days break from my DAW or anything music related in general. Watch a bunch of documentaries (David Attenborough FTW). And get outside and discover places that are peaceful, tranquil or something like sitting under a tree on the coastline watching the waves crash into the rocks. That usually gets my creativity flowing again most of the time.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Dream collaboration would definitely be either Black Sun Empire or State Of Mind. They are both huge inspirations to me & the things you would learn from either of those guys would be priceless!
I’d say Bad Company also but kinda already done that with one member which is a dream come true so keep an eye out ;).
How is the situation with parties in your country due to corona virus?
Absolutely shit… clubs open in NL until further notice. So it’s been a horrendous time to follow my dreams. In saying this I’m still here & standing amongst the shitshow this year has been.
Do you have any upcoming shows during these Covid times though?
Supposedly have a few bookings coming up in November in Czech & potentially Austria. Also talking to promoters in Poland isn’t that right :p
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be? WHO is your favourite artist right now and why ?
Atm I am absolutely loving anything Myselor, Disphonia, Merikan or Gydra put out. Burr Oak also…..Just smasher after smasher from all of those guys.
I’d really love to open or close for Ed Rush & Optical sometime!.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Probably photography cos I always had an interest in taking awesome pictures as a kid. Or just have some kind of trade under my belt.
Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues?
I have played shows all around Europe/UK/Australia/New Zealand/Canada/US in the last 6 years…..Favourite venues would have to be Doornrosje (NL), Cross (CZ), Drum Room (BE) to name a few. Least favourite I’d say was either Cotton club (NZ) lol.
Best and worst memory from a party.
Best – Walking out and playing to around 2000 last new years in Nijmegen absolutely biggest club show I have ever played.
Worst – The unprofessionalism of some promoters. Whether it’s a god awful turnout from lack of promotion, unreliable behaviour or not being picked up at an airport cos they were a complete dickhead. Really appreciate the ones who take their own time to look after you though <3
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you for sticking by me through some tough times & some wonderful times. If it wasn’t for you guys I wouldn’t be where I am at right now.
What is the most useless talent you have?
I can flip my eyelids inside out haha
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
It has been a downfall for the music industry….All about marketing yourself via social media these days and how well you can do it. But the strict algorithms make it rather difficult
What is your favourite song to perform?
Ideally fresh material that I have just finished recently. No better feeling than seeing a bunch of people going bezerk over your own creations :D.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
Far too many to mention but I admire musicians from Bach through to Joe Ford.
What is the most trouble you’ve  ever gotten into?
I can’t remember but I was a terror of a kid haha.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Nothing hurts as much as being somewhere you don’t belong.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
Higher royalties for artists on platforms like Spotify etc….The amount we get per stream now is criminal while they line their pockets with riches.
What’s next for you? Do you have any releases prepared for US in the future ?
I have been extremely busy this year yes I have 2 new EP’s done and ready….1 for a great Dutch label starting with a K, and the other is my 3rd installment for Bad Taste. I’ve also expanded into other sub genres of dnb not just neuro….So expect a few liquid projects and vocal dancefloor tunes aswell. Also tracks lined up for a bunch of labels including one I am just hanging to announce 😮 So you’ll have to keep posted for that as it’s BIG! I think next for me is a release on 0101 music with the Dutch brothers Binary…..But so many plans yes yes!!
What do you do in your free time when not making music and do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy cooking a lot…..Have certainly learned some sweet recipes during this Corona nonsense. I enjoy social events going out, having pints or dinner with friends/colleagues. And I love going on adventures, seeing places I’ve never seen and discovering things!
And for the end, what newcomers  / fresh upcoming producers should we look up to on the near future?
Definitely keep an ear out for this lot
Sabruhtorrrr (Sabotor)
And Merkee
