INTERVIEW: Jane Doe – Angel VIP / Awakened – Imagine Audio

What’s happening D&B fans!  Strex here with another exciting article on Best Drum & Bass.  This week we have something special for you, an interview with the wonderful Jane Doe.

Jane Doe is an award winning drum and bass (DnB) artist from South Australia who has been making waves in the electronic music scene since 2021. Despite her mysterious persona, Jane Doe has gained attention and respect internationally as a prolific DnB producer, quickly becoming known as one of the worlds best female neurofunk producers.

An official artist for VTO Records (UK) she has a passion for powerful sounds and infectious basslines characterized by relentless energy and soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of musical genres, both her neurofunk and liquid DnB tracks feature a combination of dark, gritty textures and melodic elements, creating a juxtaposition that keeps the listener on their toes.

In addition to her studio work, Jane Doe is becoming well known for her high velocity live performances. Taking to the stage with a commanding presence, her sets are characterized by their infectious energy, clever track selection, and the ability to read the crowd, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all. So this release is wicked, I’ve been loving listening to it and playing it in my sets.  Angel VIP has a real old school rolling feel to it that is really progressive as it goes through with a quality beat and some sneaky bongos that really gets me going!  Awakened has a beautiful minimalist feel to it but contains a load of depth and emotion.  The two tracks are brilliantly produced and I think we can expect some great things from Jane Doe in 2025.

So what got you into D&B and how long have you been a fan?

I got into DnB back in the mid/late 2000s when a friend gave me a copy of Breakbeat Kaos Jungle Sound Gold mixed by Pendulum. 

It blew my mind when I first heard it and went down the DnB rabbit hole from there.   

When I started producing around early 2020 I would try to remix Pendulum tracks while learning my way around production and I did a pretty good ‘Granite’ remix that’s floating around on YouTube somewhere!

Any influential artists you think had a steer on your sound?

My taste in DnB is so varied so its hard to say who steers it or influences it in terms of who I listen to. 

I tend to gravitate towards stuff that has soul  (and yes dammit there IS neurofunk with soul! ) Or just has straight up mad power and energy emanating in the sounds. 

My own tracks evolve very organically and are generally emotion driven as producing is like therapy for me. 

As an example a few times Ive started a neuro track that ended up as a liquid track (or vice versa) 

Ive started out furious and ready for destruction, but evolved into a puddle of sweetness and light…..

I just go with the creative flow.

In terms of refining the production and providing some invaluable advice, I can say everyone I have collaborated with has definitely influenced my growth and direction.

Tell us about your release on Imagine Audio, what gave you the inspiration for the tracks?

Both tracks have a clear juxtaposition of dark, mysterious dystopia vs euphoria/ lightness within them. 

I had done Angel a couple of years ago as a self-release but felt like it needed a re-release as a VIP. 

Both of these tracks are themed and tell a story. 

Angel VIP refers to depictions of angels based on complex or abstract descriptions found in the Bible which contrast with the conventional human-like figures with wings and halos commonly seen in modern culture.

Awakened refers to future technology and an impending alien influence

Which is your favourite from the release?

Awakened. I liked flexing my creative muscles on that one.

Are you into any other styles of music?

I like most bass music in general , particularly trap, basshouse and tearout dubstep.  

What was the inspiration for your artist name?

Jane is my real name and ‘Jane Doe’ is a term used for an unknown woman and that suited me well when I started producing because I had no desire to be known or get attention.

I taught myself how to produce because it was fun as heck to me and I get a kick out of making a good tune. I did not expect the attention at all.

The Djing thing came after and I had to teach myself how to do that too. I had to overcome some pretty hectic anxiety to be able to do it but now I love that too, its super fun!

What else can we expect from you in 2025 that you’re allowed to talk about?

I have a neuro/heavy EP with VTO that will be out this year.

Plus a heavy dnb collab track and remix with two very talented producers, Dialective and Faux Realz coming out with Brainrave

I also have teamed up with fellow Australian MC,  Pase MC and we are working on a minimal/ rollers EP that will come out in 2025 too. 

And an amazing liquid track that will be released this year also.

I hope to continue working with Imagine Audio too!

Obviously I’m a huge fan of the release, are there any artists you were honoured to have downloaded the tracks on promo? 

I was blown away when I saw that Andy C and Aphrodite were supporting the release. 

Never in my wildest dreams did I think those blokes would even listen to my stuff let alone download it. 

Might retire now while im ahead ha!
