Interview with Internal_ERROR

by | Nov 29, 2024 | Interview

I have continued my search for artists in our scene that need more attention, that’s when I stumbled upon my guest of today’s interview. I have been familiar with Internal_ERROR‘s work on YouTube, where they release breakdown videos of music projects, but I only recently discovered the amount of music they have released. Knowing them from DNB-related videos, I was surpriesed to find out how many genres they actually work with, and how well. That is among the things we discussed in our brief interview, which goes a little something like this:

Hey, hope you are doing well. Thanks for taking the time to have this little chat with me. First of all, I’d like you to give our readers a little introduction of yourself!

“Hi, I’m Internal_ERROR, just another music producer who enjoys making EDM—mostly Dubstep, Drum and Bass, and a few other genres. Not a lot of interesting things about me I’m afraid, I’m the most “generic” guy you can find.”

Tell me a little about your usual day in the studio! Do you have any practices you always do? What is your approach to music making and how do you go about it? Who and what inspires you?

“I wouldn’t say I have an “usual” day in the studio because I don’t really have a studio, I just make music in my bedroom, which means I get interrupted all the time. I work on music whenever I feel inspired or bored, but most of the time I’m either watching YouTube, playing games or just working. Each day is different, as I’m always trying new things, techniques, ideas, and concepts, most of which are somewhat abstract. If something sounds promising from the start, I’ll try to finish it, with varying degrees of success. As for inspiration, I don’t really look up to specific artists. Instead, I get inspired by individual songs. But in terms of artists I enjoy, I’d mention Skrillex, Mefjus, Noisia, Burial, and a few others from the EDM world, and a ton of artists from the Non-EDM world as well.”

Your discography is pretty impressive in terms of variety (and quality). You work in a lot of genres, which must be quite the challenge, right? How do you decide what you want to make next? Or do you leave that decision to what the creative flow can bring out of you?

“Honestly, it’s easier to just go with the flow and create what feels “right” for the track rather than forcing it into a specific genre. The music itself usually dictates where it wants to go, and I try to respect and honour that process. If a track wants to go from genre A to genre B, I’ll try and make it as cohesive as possible.Deciding what genre to make is completely random. It depends on the ideas I’m experimenting with. I might start with a House vibe, and it could transform into Dubstep — it all depends on what feels natural.”

I originally discovered you from your YouTube channel, where you give insights into how you made your tracks. Is this a career path you’re interested in? What are your goals with YouTube?

“To be honest, I’ve never had any big goals for YouTube. I just wanted to share tutorials or something similar, but since I don’t like speaking in videos, and it’s a lot of work to edit each video, I decided to show the projects visually instead by just recording the project file, with no cuts. It’s straight to the point — no fluff — and people can see exactly how sounds were made. I think that’s more effective than explaining everything in words.”

Let’s talk about your latest music, ‘Unbroken’! It’s such a super complex and beautiful track! The way it progresses from mellow, liquid vibes to heavy stuff at the end is amazing. Is there a story behind it? It feels like you’re telling one.

“Funny enough, there’s no story behind ‘Unbroken’ (just like every other track I’ve made). The track actually came from merging two old projects. The liquid DnB section was its own project where I tried to make some liquid DnB (though I think it’s a bit too heavy for that). The heavy DnB part was a separate project that started with a random sound and a breakbeat-esque drum loop. Later, I swapped the original sound for that crunchy chord stack present in the final track.I think the reason it feels like there’s a story is because I let the track flow naturally. I didn’t force it to fit into a single genre. It’s a combination of both projects, glued together in a way that feels cohesive, and I simply try to make that more noticeable.”

Can we expect a breakdown video of Unbroken on your channel?

“Not for now. I’m not really a fan of sharing completed projects in that way. The videos I upload are usually from tracks/ideas that are still in progress, where I’m unsure if I’ll even finish them. Some of them get finished though!”

Is this tune a part of a bigger, forthcoming project? Tell us what’s happening behind the scenes—give us something to look forward to!

“No, ‘Unbroken’ isn’t part of a bigger project — it’s just another single, like the countless others I’ve released this year. Releasing at least one song every month was a personal challenge I set for myself, and I’ve completed it as of October of last year, and I’m really happy with that.I’m usually more spontaneous when it comes to “big projects”. For example, my Cycle EP (a 2-track project) was built around the idea that each track would lead into the other, creating a continuous loop. That concept came to me randomly one night when I was trying to sleep.I’m sure I’ll have another creative burst like that next year. For now, though, I have a heavy Dubstep single in the works, and I think it’s one of my favourite (and heaviest) tracks I’ve made in a while!”

Was super interesting to learn about Internal_ERROR, it is always nice hearing about what artists go through and how they music comes about. I linked some of my favourite banger from them in this article, however, I recommend everyone to go check them out themselves, such a unique artist!
