L 33, finally! A relative newcomer, L 33 has been taking the scene by storm the past two years, now making his return to PROGRAM with “Manipulate” after his last success “Helvetica” (one of my personal favorites). “Manipulate” really shows off the style L 33 has developed over the past few months with some of his previous releases on Lifted and Eatbrain and is massively successful in doing so. It starts with a steady pulse, some techy stabs, and the beginning of an incomprehensible vocal sample and wastes no time building up to the drop. After a robotic-sounding vocal sample, “Manipulate” begins its reign of terror with gritty and relentless bass. The techy stabs offer a small amount of melody to guide the song, and a very familiar L 33 sound makes itself quite apparent.
