Notequal on DOMAIN

For those who know their neuro, Notequal does not require introduction, however, their constant growth in popularity and variety of productions deserves more attention. The Slovakia based producer trio, consisting of absu_ntql, Viktorproxer and Longmandnb has just releases their brand new EP, Fractal on DOMAIN, a label established earlier this year, affiliated with Overview. Domain is a label focused on deep, dark and techy productions and have an already colourful catalogue decorated by artists such as Able, Dub Ten or Tryst, to which the Slovakian trio an exciting, heavy and progressive EP contributed.

Notequal’s Fractal EP,  released in 2024 September, is a complex work of convoluted breakbeats and interesting, detailed and precise sound design, that are merged into unique, techy pieces. A good example from the EP is ‘Shadows’, which starts off with a mysterious, atmospherical intro transforming into the drops’ first 16 bars that features minimalistic drums with heavy, distorted bass sounds that create the rhythm as they flow and merge into one-another. As the track progresses into the following second and third sixteen bar section, the role of the drums and basses swap places, the bass becomes a more steady base for the track, garnished with funky drum patterns.

‘All Night‘ is definitely something new from Notequal, it leans towards the UK sound of dnb, rather than what we might be used to from them, though, they didn’t fail making it an absolute banger. This one, just like the rest of the EP, begins with an atmospheric and minimal intro, dropping into a neuro flavoured, funky but more of a jump up style main part. The way they combine the subgenres really makes them stand out in creativity and technicality, designing such stimulating sounds, structuring each track differently is what makes this EP so great. Despite the EP being sonically very much cohesive, it is not at all boring, the similar intros generate a vibe that connects each track, the drops are what make them individuals.

It is always a pleasure seeing artists exploring new segments of the genre, I hope to see a lot more of them stepping out their comfor zone, bringing us nothing but bangers.
