Pharoah – Origins [Liondub International]

With Liquid, Jump Up, Jungle and Neuro all in the bag, this release has something for everyone who loves Drum & Bass, and it gives a preview of what will be featured on his forthcoming LP.

Liondub International proudly presents another standout EP from Pharoah, a mysterious new producer out of Norwich who hit hard out the gate with his ‘Spells’ EP back in late January.  ‘Origins’ is Pharoah’s second major release and it showcases his versatile, dynamic sound.

This EP is no doubt a pleasure to listen to and a breath of fresh air.

It’s really enjoyable to see different sub-genres being demonstrated showing the artist’s knowledge and grasp of the drum and bass genre as a whole.

Songs like ‘No Other’ and ‘True Colours’ display his jazzy liquid vibes with fulfilling soundscapes. Whether it’s delicate breaks or swirling pads, there’s alot to be enjoyed as the basslines are funky and groovy enough to carry the vibe. They are layered in such a way that the sounds really drift, flow and play against eachother. Both of these songs have a very lovely feeling to them that is just really nice to listen to.

‘Ground Rules’ gives us a taste of a sassy jump-up banger. It’s got a big, wonky bassline, hype vocals, and a sub-bass that really jumps out at you. ‘The Omen’ shows us a darker side of Pharaoh with a tribal, almost haka-like intro and bassline that just vibrates your skull. It will definitely have your Neurofunk friends turning their heads.

‘Once’ is the real stand-out track to me as I find it to be the catchiest hook. Dancehall party vibes paired with silky vocals and a little bit of dub siren sprinkled in just to set the mood. The song neatly introduces each of the elements before dropping you into a naughty jungle bassline. What I love the most are the really creative, industrial FX elements in the reverb that I can only describe as sounding like a building farting and I absolutely love it. It feels unique, but also effective! This song does very well with the 808 bassline, jungle breaks and vocals together which no doubt can get stuck in your head. I think this song is no doubt a party-starter.

Pharoah is definitely bringing some of the purest DNB from the humble city of Norwich! I am excited to hear more from this young artist. Look out for the interview coming soon with Pharoah himself.

Get to know Pharoah and his sound, there’s plenty more to come from this rising UK star on the Liondub International label.
