Back to back Mirror Universe compilations have thrust Eatbrain into the spotlight yet again, spanning 36 tracks and nearly 50 different artists, these two LP’s make a great running for best album of the year. A-Cray’s remix to Qo’s “Evil Dead” was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated tracks of the release. The intro is fast and powerful, with apocalyptic-sounding synths and a deep, pulsating low end. A vocal sample–undoubtedly from a horror movie–offers a relatively appropriate message to the listeners: “You’re all going to die tonight”. Massive low end rings out with an aggressive and relentless pattern, a perfectly designed snare with a touch of reverb separates and orchestrates the developing maelstrom, and the apocalyptic synths return to add the sinister flavor that made the original great. The remix eventually breaks down into half-time (quite possibly my favorite moment of the song) while maintaining the same aggressive patterns, but now with an added hip-hop flair, making for an exceptionally dynamic track.
Overall I give the track an 8/10 and really love the dedication to quality that Eatbrain has so consistently been demonstrating. I would encourage you to check out both Mirror Universe compilations as they are chock-full of more spectacular neurofunk such as this.
