SLWDWN – Persona

The sound of neurofunk and similar, dark and heavy subgenres of DNB have been continuously changing and evolving just like the depth and variety of music production techniques and opportunities that the DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) and third party softwares provide. Because of how accessible music making is these days, the race between producers just got a whole lot more competitive, however, if I had to mention a producer who has definitely been actively shaping the sound of modern, dark DNB, I would say SLWDWN.

SLWDWNs discography dates back to 2019 and since then, he has released music on labels such as Sinful Maze, Eatbrain or Blackout Music. His signature style is centered around aggressive bass drum-like bass stabs, dark and mean reese basses and progressing song structures. 

His latest and yet most ambitious project, Persona, SLWDWN’s debut LP on Sinful Maze elevates this sound to a next level, introducing soulful and personal productions alongside the heavy duty bangers we would expect. The album, released on Sinful Maze on the 6th of September features collaborations with contemporary neurofunk icons such as Burr Oak, Mc Coppa, A-cray and Holotrope. 

Persona

The album opens with a skit followed by the track ‘Dreaming’, a more of a subtle, pretty work featuring a jungly drum break taking us into the concept of ‘Persona’, which SLWDWN describes on his social media as: “The idea of project “Persona” is about how people often create social masks or use various personas to present themselves as more socially acceptable or attractive.[…] People can lose their own identity for their personality.”. Bottom Line ft. Burr Oak

This collaboration with Burr Oak released as a single before the album is a huge, face melting banger, that will without a doubt turn any dance floor into madness. The sound of the two artists is merged into one in a spectacular way, giving us melodies, basses and vocals we may recognise Burr Oak from, complimenting with SLWDWN style arrangement and signature sounds.

Behind The Mask

Opening with a mysterious intro, quickly transitions into a massive nan-flipping, stinky monster of a track. This piece shows us really, how clean and technical DNB can get with tight and crispy drums constantly evolving into something new and layered basses that would tear down any club on a Friday night.
