The Upbeats – Haggard / Rave Repeat [VISION]

After releasing the ‘Not Forever’, the Snake and the Wolf has started showing us a new side of theirs. Their LP from 2021 had that “future DNB” sound a lot of new artists are chasing in the scene today, but it seems like our favourite kiwi duo didn’t get stuck with that sound after showing the world their take on it. The duo were first known for making Neurofunk, which evolved into their own, unique style under many years. Their intricate sound design and complex rhythmic plays isn’t all that makes their track anymore, they keep pushing the boundaries with sometimes more poppy(‘For You’), sometimes more underground(‘Halcyon’) tunes and I am all for it! With their latest release they are back again on VISION with two intriguing pieces.

Haggard

Starting off with ‘Haggard’, The Upbeats provides us a fresh take on the currently peaking frog sound. This track comes across to me as a flick to this current trend, especially after the title, and the duo’s way of promoting it as the “haggard” single of the year. Even though the Snake and Wolf may not be friends with the Frog, they are never been so far from disappointing. ‘Haggard’ is an ever-changing old school sounding masterpiece. The intro makes us feel like we are in for an old school neuro track, until the frog comes in. However, instead of heavy Jump up, ‘Haggard’ is a playful, funky Drum and Bass tune. I recommend this to all the “frog sound” haters, maybe this will change your attitude towards the trend.

Rave Repeat

Being active since 2004, The Upbeats has not often showed this side of theirs. ‘Rave Repeat’ is exactly what it sounds like (unlike ‘Haggard’). It features iconic rave and acid synth sounds, the classic jungly drum pattern and break fills dressed in a modern gown. What gives the modern sound to me – apart from being tight, clean, crispy and loud – is the 4/4 sections and the vocal sample that makes me think of Skrillex or Hamdi, sounds like something implemented from contemporary Dubstep and it suits ‘Rave Repeat’ very well!
