BOOMSLANG IS BACK INTO THE NEW YEAR , FILLING THE BASS BINS WITH PURE VENOM!!!
Thats right bassheads. Boomslang Recordings is cranking up the volume on 2021 out of the gate. The month of February will see two releases. We’ll receive our daily bread by way of a single from the infamous and prolific combination of Todd Buchler & Pish Posh. Followed up immediately by an E.P. from SST. Both coming completely uncoiled, ready to sink their fangs into the dnb massive.
TODD BUCHLER & PISH POSH // SILENCE & VIOLENCE
This beast of a tune dropped this past Friday, February 19th. Coming directly out of the launchpad with a tough beat, dubby guitar licks, ragga jungle lick shots, and some east coast hip hop flavor by the way of a Notorious B.I.G sample. Once we get past the intro of this cut. We drop straight into the antithesis of what a tough dance floor roller should be.
Super stacked layers of shredding hoovers, muddied dutty low end, and an ascending synth tear that permeates every part of your current existence. I’m not at all surprised at how good this tune is. Pish Posh has been known to bring forth some of the best dnb that has ever been produced in America. Marching armies of junglists across the country to some of the most prolific dnb tunes ever released. The combo with Buchler really leads itself to a modified style of song writing and production value.
Meeting all expectations I had of a certified dance floor banger. Complete with all the bells and whistles . Showcasing what the end result is of decades experiencing and blending hip-hop/dnb/jungle/and dub into one entity.
SST // HOLY TRUTH EP dropping February 26th
Currently SST seems to be methodically dropping heaters all over the nation. Did he predict we would be shattering cold records and feel the need to lite a fire in dnb this winter? Or was it perfect timing that he would come out, and dominate with multiple releases, on the best stateside dnb imprints right now? This EP is short and sweet. Featuring two dark and techy rollers expertly crafted. Both ‘Holy Truth’ & ‘True Form’ feature a blend of subliminal voices, rich and thick low end, super bouncy drum lines, and piercing synth stabs. Bringing me back to the SF Phunkatek crew style of smooth bouncy rollers riding the edge of a full dark dude brockout. If we could take all the best parts of past releases from Higher Education/Thermal/Human Imprint/Rawkuts and roll a phatty. This EP is what we would get.
‘Holy Truth’ even throws a call back to another Boomslang release by NC-17 ‘ Cemetery of Splendor’ via a synth patch that is used in both tunes. Which is quite clever to have multiple producers using the same patches and stems. Create multiple releases in the same catalog that play off of each other very well.
‘True Form’ takes us deeper into the mist of the jungle. Weaving more amens and drum edits into play. Relying on darker melodies and an abundance of “techy” amens & nihlistic atmospherics. Building a drum line that is mixed to punch your teeth in. This is the curb stomper of the two tracks.
I really dig both of these releases. They both hit the darker side of dnb. Something that is reflective of the time we are in, and helps balance light and dark in modern drum and bass. ‘Silence & Violence’ is a transporter device to those old school ‘Frogger’ styled speaker cone destroyers. Reminiscent of 1210/DC14/Prototype rollers. Where the ‘Holy Truth’ Ep goes into a more cerebral and cyberpunk route. both productions are top notch. With really well developed mixing and mastering putting the bow on the prize. Which is 3 really great new pieces of drum and bass history.
Once again Boomslang keeps the fire burning, and the vibes heavy. I can’t wait to see what lies in the future for this new label, and the artists it revitalizes or discovers.
