Another week’s gone past, bringing tons of fresh heat to the DNB world, however when there is something new on Eatbrain, that is always a priority for me. The Hungarian label being responsible for some of the most legendary and iconic Neurofunk has done it again! This time Eatbrain brought us Vizzen’s, (formerly featured on DIVERGENCE V and Bloodfire by MIDNIGHT CVLT) debut EP on the label, Sky Roars. That’s what I am questioning the artist himself about today.
I usually ask my guests in the first question to introduce themselves to our readers. Where are you from, what is your musical background? How did you become a producer?
–Vizzen:Â I’m Vicente, I’m 24 years old and I’m from Andalusia, Spain. Since I was little I’ve always been very connected to music. My father used to play the guitar and at home I had keyboards, guitars… I actually ended up taking music theory classes because I really liked playing around composing little songs at home. At the age of 15 I decided to stop taking classes (I’m a flute player) because I felt it wasn’t interesting enough. At that time EDM and Brostep were very fashionable, it was the golden age of YouTube and thanks to that I was able to discover FL Studio. I wanted to make my compositions on my computer, and in the end that curiosity has led me to where I am today. After going through electro house, dubstep, glitch hop, it seems that I have established myself in drum and bass.
Last week you returned to Eatbrain to release your debut EP on the label. How do you feel about it? Did you enjoy this project?
–Vizzen: I was really looking forward to this project, I’m very happy that it’s now a reality. It’s been a very fast-paced project because we originally had a different idea for the songs that would make up the EP. As we got feedback from Eatbrain, we discarded some songs and improved some details, but without a doubt, these have been key changes to form a solid EP. I remember looking at Eatbrain’s covers of my favorite tracks by artists like Teddy Killerz and thinking: “Wow, I love the artwork, I love the track, it’s a perfect fusion of visual and sound. One day I want to experience that with a track of mine.” . So you can imagine how happy I am.

Can you tell us the stories behind these productions? Did you have a concept to work around when writing the EP?
–Vizzen: It all started with ‘Can’t Stay’. At the end of 2022 I was very focused on finding my own sound within drum and bass and I knew that if I wanted to send something to Eatbrain, it had to be an EP and with a common idea. That’s where the main bass of the song came from, which is something like neuro brass, and that atmosphere, I wanted it to sound like a climate catastrophe was hitting the Earth and making it difficult for the human race to survive. Elements like cinematic horns and brass, sounds of destruction, choirs, I think they fit really well with neurofunk. During this time in which I had to fine-tune the EP, an even better idea came to me, and that is that I could introduce alien invasions to the lore. With this idea I finished shaping a lore to accompany my music, and I think it’s been a success because it has given me a sound guide that is coming in very handy for future songs.

Your discography features multiple collaborations with MIDNIGHT CVLT. You both have experience in DnB and other bass-oriented genres, is that how you found each other to collab with? Can we expect some more soon?
–Vizzen:Â Well, the truth is that we met when Miguel started his Midnight Cvlt project. I had already heard Miguel’s music as Michael White, but his new sound and futuristic cyberpunk lore captivated me. We weren’t in contact, but one day I wanted to learn how he mastered bass house, since at that time I wanted to get into the genre and I couldn’t get a strong sound. Midnight Cvlt was doing that genre and I liked the way it sounded, so I wrote to him. It just so happened that we lived 10 minutes away, lol. That was really what changed everything, since in the part of Spain where we live there aren’t many bass producers, so we quickly connected. We’ve spent many days in the studio and we practically talk every day, so Miguel is more than an artist I collaborate with, he’s a friend and one of the best. If I’m not mistaken we have 4 songs released, and I can tell you that more are on the way. I’d really like to see us end up being a recurring duo, like Mefjus & Camo & Crooked or Andy and Lucas.

I always like asking for a little insight to producers’ studio habits. What does the average day in the studio looks like for Vizzen? Do you have a standard process when making music?Â
–Vizzen:Â I don’t really have any habits, because unfortunately I don’t only dedicate myself to music. Whenever I have some free time, I dedicate it to it, more like a hobby to which I spend almost all my free time. This doesn’t mean that I don’t take it seriously, in fact my dream is that things go well enough so that I can work only on my music. Maybe the fact that I don’t have it as my job is what makes my music more special to me, because in the end I let my creative side flow into it and not my obligatory side. As for how I work, as a general rule I like to start an idea and practically finish it or leave it very, very advanced. When I sit down in the studio and start producing, I get a bombardment of ideas that I have to try out as soon as possible, so that they don’t go away, and the moment I find the one that doesn’t generate doubts, I continue with it. That’s how most of my songs have come about.
What inspires you and what do you do when you feel like you are stuck with your music?
-Vizzen: I need about a two-hour stream of concentration and then I go into a mental stream until I get tired, but with half a complete song or a solid idea. I really get too lazy to continue small ideas, since I can’t have the same mindset I had the day I started it, and therefore the result won’t be the same, it will be like making a remix of myself. Then I spend a lot of time refining the song, adding complexities etc, but let’s say I do the musical skeleton almost continuously.
When I don’t have good ideas, I usually get influenced by video games and movies. I love soundtracks that are linked to a theme, like I’m trying to do with my music. I recommend it to people who can’t find a way.
What are the next steps for you in your music career? Any big gigs or releases you can talk about
–Vizzen: On the production side,I intend to continue making waves at Eatbrain. I think I still have some ammunition left.. I think I still have some ammunition left. On the other hand, away from neurofunk, I have some important projects in the works, including an album. We’ll have to see how things develop. On the DJ side, I’d love to make myself known in Europe. Festivals like Rampage, Let it Roll, Korsakov, are my main goal right now.
