Last week, the world was gifted another album from the likes of the infamous and prolific Enduser. Released by Decay Records, a sub label of Elm Imprint based out of Virgina. It has felt like a frikken lifetime since I was chopping up a release from Enduser. The last album came out in 2016, the Enter to Exit cut off Hands out of Germany. It was straight up smashing. Leaving me absolutely ravenous for more. Now here we are. Ten years later and ten years older. Ten years sadder.

But the fucking wait was worth it. It’s been so long since I binged the sounds of cinematic sorrow through the lens of breakcore and distorted amen heavy death & bass music. That I forgot it was a thing. Which is what made this album drop so impactful to me in this moment. There was a long enough gap for me to move onto other vibes in the genre. That I forgot how much I missed this style of production and song composition. Remembering how brutal it can really get when you ride alongside someone making art that gives zero fucks.

Enduser, in my opinion, has always been at the top of the food chain when it comes to being a hardware and frequency wizard.   His ability to make things make sense with mixing and engineering continues to evolve. Especially when it comes to crafting every sound from scratch. He’s not taking some one else’s Serum patches and presets or relying on over used and over compressed sample banks pitched through instagram. His sounds are his sound. When you hear an Enduser song, you know it’s an Enduser song. Just like when you hear NIN, you know it’s NIN.

No one else does what he does. Which is rare in electronic music these days. Especially these days. “Same-ness” and replication seems to be trending. Riding closely with conformity and complacency. Which is why guys like Lynn and albums like Unquiet are so detrimental to maintaining a balance. As well as, giving new fans their first ” what the fuck was that?” moment.   Serving upcoming producers their first taste of arrangements and edits that pull the curtain back. Cracking the sky and letting the light of a new realm in. One that solidifies the concept that, pushing boundaries can and should exist.

It’s ok for people to feel uncomfortable with art. It’s ok for them to feel a sense of warm and calm too. Which is where this will take you. This record is a full release of emotions and feelings. It’s horrifying, gorgeous, futuristic, ambient , textural & opulent. When the dark is dark. It’s pitch black. When it needs to be soothing, it’s brand new French Terry cloth on freshly shaven skin.

The record stays in a very approachable and comfortable tempo. paring it with remixes and treatments from a brutal cast of producers. Which take the listener into other realms and tunnels. Beneath the surface of what you expect and then pulling you right back into the pit. Out of the 13 cuts, there are definitely four distinct movements and styles. With clever bridging and transitioning between songs. Creating drama, tragedy, cleansing & therapy.

Normally I go through these releases. Cut by cut and give my own analysis. But this is one of those situations where I just want you to go grab this album. In whatever format you like, Vinyl , cd, digital , braille . I don’t care. Give yourself an hour of un interrupted time. Put your phone down. Crank up the pods, headphones, car stereo or studio monitors. And get throttled! If you are a longtime Enduser fan. This will not disappoint you. If you have never heard of Enduser before. Welcome to the party!

You’ll never experience  dnb like this in a Bou set on a ferris wheel while you’re crushing a Sour Blueberry Boombox. Or in a partially full club room while one of your homies is yelling over the music. In between vaping and justifying the benefit in using AI in production to increase “workflow” . This is dark dude shit meant to slam backrooms in Belgium full of cyberpunks and emotionally damaged people. Out there together, hunting for a connection to something that will be so sonically impactful. It is a temporary shelter from how fucking horrible the world is right now. This is the record you didn’t know you needed to hear. This record is the Downward Spiral of drum and bass.
