Last week Stateside based neurofunk label, Neuro Plague , dropped its second installment of the Incubation EP‘s . Another edition to a series of EP’s that will continue to dig its nails underneath our flesh. Peeling back the contemporary idea of what dark future funk can be. Out of the gate this EP starts with a phosphorus burn across the dance floor by the way of Esym. “So Far Gone” as the first track sets the tone for the release. This ultra black stepping neuro roller is pure damage. Swelling Cradle of Filth style synth work, layered between Black Sun Empire influenced reece lines. With running percussion and staggered drum patterns. Leads the listener away from anything that resembles hope. This one is dark, depressing & does the work of an archangel.

Next up there is a collaboration between the ” down unda” drum-inatrix, Jane Doe &  New Zealand sword wielder Victim. Smashing the tune “Take It” with the precision and strength of a plasma cutter. As the second point of viral contact of the release. Take It slams us with a deep and rich take on gritty neurofunk. As a bassline driven “wobbla”. We get baptized in a more rambunctious take of the Virus UK style. Stomping drums and cavernous minimalism keep the head and feet moving. While the haunting female vocal lines & dark cathedral atmospherics keep the chill in the room, and the speakers pumping. This has me reminiscing of the WormHole LP. Which is the golden standard of the genre.

Wrapping up this behemoth of a EP. Is a true smasha’ from the one like BIG DADDY DIODE! The Worcester warlord has been murdering the neurofunk nihilists with heater after heater. For me, this record has got a bit of everything I like in neuro. There are three pieces of work that all stand in their own lane. Whilst delivering the chunk, the funk & the slytherin. There is a tune for every type of dark dnb head here. One for the old heads who’ve been chain-smoking cigs, arms crossed, at the back of the venue for 30 years. One for the flat brim, black t-shirt , fist pump homies. One for the fishnet shirt wearing, bummer buddies, with a fresh labret piercing. This one is a hulk style smasher.
